Meet the 2008 Dive Club Officers

 President:   Amy Kurtenbach

My Open Water Certification was completed in 1999. I was fortunate to grow up living on Eld Inlet.  As a kid I took every opportunity to swim in Puget Sound or float on my air mattress with my head in the water watching the fish and all of the critters. The concept of swimming with the fishes still fascinates me.

My favorite dive locations include Day Island, Titlow Beach, and any site on Vancouver Island, Hood Canal, and in the Caribbean (especially Cozumel).  I like them all!

I recently added underwater photography to my diving in both local and warm waters. I hope to be able to show non-divers what we get to enjoy underwater.

Diving has been an ambition of mine since I was a young kid... But I didn't realize the dream until I was in my forties. Certified in 2005, I am still relatively new to the sport, but have logged quite a few dives in that time.

I have been very fortunate to dive with some remarkably capable, accomplished, and patient individuals who have become my friends. I thank them for helping me become a better, safer diver.

The highlight of my diving experience has been the caverns of Yucatan, Mexico. The warm water reefs of Cozumel are breathtaking, and the shipwrecks in the chill waters of B.C. are a thrill. Still, there is nothing like playing with the 'Wolfies' at Titlow, huntin 'Six-Gills' at Owens Beach, or putting around Puget Sound in our friend's boats looking for the next site to splash. Since my sweetie, Colleen, was certified a year ago, we have been able to enjoy this great sport together.

 See y'all in the water!

I have been fascinated by the underwater world since the days of Mike Nelson in the TV Series Sea Hunt. My underwater experience began skin diving off the Southern California beaches back in early seventies. A few years later I decided I wanted to stay down longer than I could on a single breath. I was trained to use SCUBA with a horse collar BC, "J" valve & backpack, completing my Open water certification from Malibu Divers in 1979.

Since that time I've spent many a weekend regularly exploring much of the southern CA coastline from San Diego to Santa Barbara and neighboring Islands by shore & by boat.

During the Early 80's to Mid 90's I worked with two Southern California dive shops; American Divers & ScubaHaus as A Dive master & Asst. instructor working with Open water to Adv. Students sharing their first experiences on trips to Catalina and the Channel islands.

In addition to assisting w/classes in the mid 90's; I joined a charter dive boat service specializing in advanced dives as a dive master, allowing me to experience several of the Deeper, more challenging & far less visited sites such as San Clemente Island and outlying banks of Tanner, Osborne, Farnsworth, and Cortes.  While with this service I was also fortunate enough on rare occasions when weather permitted to experience multi-day visits to Begg, Wilson & Richardson's rock aboard great dive boats like the Coral Sea , Peace, Encore & Charisma.

I moved to WA in '99 and quickly realized diving in 3-5mm of rubber or with a dry suit in sweatshirt & jeans was not the novelty here as it was in CA, Diving dry w/thermals was far more typical. I have spent most of time since I have been here diving in the Hood canal and lower to mid Puget sound, with the occasional trip to warm water in the Caribbean or Hawaii.   I'm looking forward to exploring the underwater regions around Anacortes, San Juans and into BC this summer! …Hope to See you there!
